  2. Hi, I am trying to work out subneting of 192.168.0.101. Everything seem to work fine except when I check on subnet calculator it gives me.

    Network: 192.168.0.96
    Broadcast: 192.168.0.111

what i dont understand is my IP address host starts from 101 and its giving me 96 to 111. Why is it going down 101 rather than incrementing. Following is my work out.

I tried making 10 subnets using following.

    192.168.0.101
    255.255.255.0

    binary = 8 4 2 1 = 4 bits
    1 0 1 0

Now 4 bits moved to left makes 128+64+32+16 = 240
so the new mask is 255.255.255.240 and the short notation would be 192.168.0.101/28

Now using the least bit which is 16, i have worked out the following:

    192.168.0.101 - 116
    .117 - 132
    .133 - 148
    .149 - 164

please correct me where i am wrong in above calculation. Now where does Network: 192.168.0.96, Broadcast: 192.168.0.111 as suggested by subnet calc comes in this? shouldnt it start from Network: 192.168.0.101 and Broadcast: 192.168.0.117?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Every thing is right but when you create groups or sbnets with the increment of 16 then u have to start with 0 not 101
Your first subnet will be 192.168.0.0 - 0.15
      192.168.0.16. -31
      Why u start with 192.168.0.101

    2. Thanks for the clarification Kashif bhai. Now i know it will always start with 0 when doing subneting. I was bit confused with what if your ISP gives you a public IP something like this to subnet.

      Thanks
